Explore Mental Illness and Recovery with God Body Disconnect

No musical soundscape artist is able to convey the breadth and explore the depths of the human psyche like God Body Disconnect, and the new release from composer Bruce Moallem is proof positive of his talent. The Weight of Regression is the eighth release from God Body Disconnect, and is a parallel journey through mental illness and instability - a languid fresco of chorded pads and somber keys, lilting between ominous mood and atonal ambivalence. Accompanying the pads are field recordings, as well as the signature voice recordings for which God Body Disconnect albums are known.

The Weight of Regression continues GBD’s musical explorations into the miasma of mental conditions and narratives of ghostly doldrum - new flourishes of sounds canvas are being utilized for this album, as well as more immersive soundscapes, providing more of a palette for the overall presentation; previous albums have used field recordings mixed with voice overs, carrying and alluding to a greater continuation of an overall narrative, but there is a more grandiose feeling with the exposition in this album, and I will be honest in mentioning that I am unsure if this album is continuation of the previous storyline, or if it is more of a side story - or not even connected at all.

Tracks such as “Dosed and Dreaming” return the noir jazz elements that are a proclivity for GBD’s theme, while other songs like, “Remnants of a Soldier” are glazed with a slight melancholy yet expectant hope, belying the usual dread machinations that are prevalent in the genre. There is a narrative story to this album, do not misunderstand, but the story is taken from the perspective of a new arrival to a psychiatric institution; regardless of the continuity, this album feels introspective and wholly personal, and this connection resonates with each track.

Fans of God Body Disconnect will not be disappointed with this new album, as it is a soft and purposeful addition to the GBD catalog, and fans of Cryo Chamber atmospheric soundscapes will certainly enjoy this journey. You can purchase The Weight of Regression in CD digipak or digital format on the Cryo Chamber Bandcamp page.
