Caldon Glover Explores the Modern Dystopia in Metrophagy

Caldon Glover returns with a new, poignant, ambient journey into the contemporaneous zeitgeist. Metrophagy is the second offering from this Cryo Chamber newcomer, whose debut release, Ùir made quite the impression on listeners, with its methodical attention to enveloping the listeners in tribal atmospherics. Metrophagy is a wholly unique animal, casting an aural gaze at another animal -  humanity in the here and now. This is an introspective ambient examination at the effigy of society and the obstinate, delirious march of humanity toward a false existence propped by technology, and not the natural earth beneath it.

Subtlety and nuance is a penchant for Caldon Glover, and Metrophagy embraces said methodology with gusto, presenting vistas of flesh entwined with wire, where mankind in his quest for perfection - for immortality - has supplanted his physical birthright with an amalgamation of circuitry, such is displayed in this album, as growing pads and thrums of circuit-bent analog pads swell and ebb, punctuated by stabs and strikes of unknown mechanical percussives. The album avoids the overall feeling of dread, yet there is a dissonance to many of the chord shapes and the blanketing timbre of the music that give a feeling of impending unease throughout the tracks - a feeling of “something is not quite right”, and much like our natural inclinations in reality, the album continues forward, lacing its placid ambient beds with unnatural occlusions of synth flourishes that embed and entwine within the framework of the music, much like humanity is embracing the webbing and entangling of circuitry with sinew.

Metrophagy is a musical study of determined nuance, and also of patience in performative ambience - Caldon Glover is never in a hurry to open the windows of imaginative expression with his music, and this new aural soundscape is testament to his prescribed methodical approach to maximal presentation within minimal constraint - but with this particular style of “cinematic” ambience, it is the breadth of imagination that transcends the bounds of constraint and gives the listener far greater boundaries - no boundaries - of listening experience, and Metrophagy is a perfect example of this.
