Shifter Switches Gears On Time Travel Tropes

SHIFTER follows a socially-awkward young woman who experiences painful and gruesome side effects after experimenting with time travel.

A recluse on the family farm since her father’s death, Teresa (Nicole Fancher, Unchained Love) is tinkering around with the space-time continuum for her capstone project, and well; you know that’s never been a good idea.

She tests her contraption on her precious kitty cat Bernard, and things seem to go just fine, so of course, the next step is human testing.

Following trouble at her factory job, increasing financial troubles, she goes on a bad date. This being the final straw, she uses her homemade time machine to take some pretty sweet revenge on the jerkface she went out with, and things start to get strange. Time starts to fold and warp, and Teresa makes some adjustments and thinks she might have fixed it.

But this wouldn’t be a horror flick if she had, right? Right!

I don’t want to spoil it for you, but let’s just say that it ends up that neither she nor her precious kitter has to schedule a trip through time anymore, and it isn’t pleasant.

The college librarian, Blake (Ashley Mandanas, Golden Arm) has a little crush on Teresa, and they try to have a nice evening having drinks. This gets ruined by some other buttheads at the bar, and back at Blake’s apartment, Teresa reveals the damage that the shifting through time is doing, and not through simple conversation, if you catch my drift.

The Horror Collective has done it again, that’s for sure! Shifter is a well-paced and thoughtful film. A very interesting score, weaving in ambient everyday sounds we are used to and making them seem amplified; speeding up, slowing down, and bending just like time. The story weaves back into itself like an ouroboros, calling back to tiny details dropped throughout the movie, and watching the deterioration of Teresa’s body and mind is heartbreaking. Do yourself a favor and give this one a watch.
